Like maybe one of the characters is trying to make a new friend, but doesn't think this new friend will like them the way they are, so they try to make some changes. And in the end, they reveal their true personality (and a typical happy ending could also involve this new friend turning out to have been hiding things about their own personality too, and they end up becoming good friends).
Or maybe, one of Twilight's friends is keeping a secret about themself, because they are led to believe that the others will not accept them if they find out. The lesson could be about how true friends will always accept you for who you are, which ties in with being true to yourself. Something along those lines.
I think they do touch on being true to yourself a lot, in different aspects.
And I think learning to not take your friends for granted is an important lesson for *everyone*. You never know what you 'got till it's gone... :(
A lot of people have said that they would strongly prefer romance to be kept out of the show, and although I completely understand their reasoning, I personally would welcome it if it were to be in the stars at any point, since the creators have so far not handled anything "the wrong way." They've consistently been delighting us--or the vast majority of us, at the very least. I don't see it as something that's too inappropriate and out-of-bounds for the series. They're obviously unafraid to "go there" as far as Spike is concerned, but perhaps that's because he's a member of another species, and thus his relationship(s) with a pony couldn't be taken all that far--they'll always seem cute, innocent, sweet, funny, etc., but almost something of a joke. A dragon being in love with a pony, hah! As far as dealing with actual equine boyfriends/girlfriends, only time will tell--and the show is nearly perfect as it is now, so they certainly don't need to add that element just because it's (supposedly) a "girl show." We fans think of absolutely everything imaginable and ship like mad, anyway, so there's no stopping it--it just may not be canon. xD
Staying true to yourself was with the episode with Trixie and I think they did a good job. Twilight's friends even told her magic is part of who she is and that they love her and the fact she uses magic. Green Isn't Your Color also touched on being true to yourself because Fluttershy, Rarity, and Twilight were making things harder by not saying the truth.
The lesson about not taking your friends for granted is basically the basis of the show. However the lesson was more prevalent in some episodes. In Owl's Well Ends Well Twilight and Spike learned how important their relationship is. Twilight learned to be more understanding and Spike learned not to be too jealous. The Best Night Ever does the same thing because each of them were being selfish in their reasons for going to the gala, but in the end they had a great time because they were together. Sisterhooves Social is a huge one saying that you shouldn't take family for granted. And last, but not least Lesson Zero Twilight's friends didn't take Twilight seriously and thus may have had the threat of losing her.
Anyways I'm not say these aren't good lessons I'm just saying its been done. Also, I don't see any problem with the whole boyfriend thing because season two ended with a wedding so I wont be surprised if some of the ponies actually start having child friendly relationships with male ponies. I think the next season should focus more on the background stories of the mane six because we really don't know much about their past I mean Twilight having a brother didn't come up until the end of season two so I think that's what the next season should focus along with fixing each character own personality flaw. In addition Cutie Mark Chronicles touched on an interesting plot twist in that they were all connected on the day Rainbow Dash did the sonic rainboom. I think this was a real important moment and since that episode they really didn't talk about the meaning behind it and so I think that will also be interesting. Anyways sorry for the really long response and if I come across as being too stern I apologize as well.
