That's the setup for the first two episodes, if she didn't that the show would probly not exist yes it was mean but it was for her own good

Yes the premise of Nightmare Moon is actually dark because it deals with hate and vengeance. Also, there's the theme of betrayal on both parts of Celestia and Luna so yes it is dark. Dark does not mean bad it just means serious or sad.

Luna was never bad, it was just that evil took a hold of her heart. Celestia banished her to the moon because of the evilness that gripped her, but yes it was dark because she also sent the real, kind Luna to the moon.
