cover shoot, photographed by Alasdair McLellan, took place at Spring Studios in London.
Despite the 8:30 a.m. call time, FKA twigs arrived early and energized, having already swung by the gym before arriving at the studio.
After flipping through racks of ballet-inspired Givenchy bodysuits and Calvin Klein slip dresses, she hopped into the makeup chair and chatted with hairstylist Duffy—a fellow Brit—about local youth culture.
The singer blasted Siouxsie and the Banshees and lip-synched "I\'m Real" by Jennifer Lopez between shots. But as soon as FKA twigs stepped in front of the camera, the soundtrack was switched back to classical music.
She was in no rush to leave after the last photo was taken. She hung out with the crew and chatted about her plans for the night, which she hoped would involve a curry dinner.
"There\'s this idea that a cover photo should be overperfected and flawless, so I went the opposite way and underperfected it, letting FKA twigs\'s natural tone come through," said makeup artist Lynsey Alexander, who kept the singer\'s skin bare except for a few dots of concealer blended under her eyes and nose. She dabbed clear balm over FKA twigs\'s eyelids, cheekbones, and lips. And to play up the singer\'s natural freckles, Alexander lightly stippled a brown eyebrow pencil across her nose, then used it to fill in and square off her brows for an "androgynous" look.
FKA twigs\'s look can be re-created with the following: Baby Lips Moisturizing Lip Balm in Quenched, Brow Drama Pomade Crayon in Deep Brown, and Fit Me Concealer in Medium by Maybelline New York.
To exaggerate FKA twigs\'s own natural texture, hairstylist Duffy added tons of curly extensions to her bob, "keeping it organic, raw, and also slightly disheveled," he said.
