Re the part of this article that states "even a potential dispute over the election", it's referring to what happened in the 2000 election between Bush and Al Gore. There was a dispute over the votes in Florida, and the result would decide the entire election. A recount of the votes was underway, but a conservative-majority Supreme Courtlink to stop the recount, meaning that Bush won.

The ruling was criticised in most law journals, with some academics stating that the opinion had emerged from the conservative majority for partisan reasons. Harvard University law professor Alan Dershowitz wrote:
"[T]he decision in the Florida election case may be ranked as the single most corrupt decision in Supreme Court history, because it is the only one that I know of where the majority justices decided as they did because of the personal identity and political affiliation of the litigants"

It's not really an exaggeration to say that a single Supreme Court decision had a very significant impact on the course of history. Had Al Gore won in 2000, there would likely have been no Iraq War, and we would have started combatting climate change two decades earlier.

Anyway, if there are close results or confusion in any battleground states, you can fucking bet on Trump dragging it through the courts. He just made it more likely that he'll win that case.
