Let's be clear: they're only paying compensation so that they can settle out-of-court and prevent the judiciary from ruling that there's an overreach of executive power, as well as to prevent details of conditions in these camps from leaking to the media that they've desperately tried to gag for the past five years... link face criminal charges and potential imprisonment if they report abuse in the camps.

Edit: The High Court is Australia's top court, above the Supreme Courts. It's where you sue the government. This was a class action suit taken pro-bono against the Commonwealth, but they're paying out over $70 million of taxpayer dollars so they won't get a ruling on a case they were probably going to lose.
