"Agents of SHIELD" season 4 will introduce the new SHIELD director who replaced Coulson.
The season 3 finale of "Agents of SHIELD" featured a six-month time jump following the defeat of Hydra and Lincoln\'s death.
Now, Clark Gregg\'s character is back to being Agent Coulson, which means that there\'s a new director who took over his role.
The season 3 finale didn\'t reveal the identity of the new head of SHIELD, but based on the fact that the agents are now working with other governmental taskforces and allowing the Nation Guard to hunt down Daisy (Chloe Bennet), the new director calling the shots may not be from SHIELD at all.
Gregg recently dished on the new director and the fate of SHIELD in the upcoming season 4 of the ABC series during an interview with Entertainment Weekly.
"I suspect, in the wake of the Sokovia Accords and the end of Civil War, the people involved in choosing who the director of SHIELD will be are other than in-house SHIELD people. If I know my government bureaucracies, I have a feeling it will be someone somewhat less qualified than Coulson to run SHIELD," the actor told the publication.
This doesn\'t come as a surprise as Coulson\'s team would more likely take it upon themselves to find Daisy, who goes by Quake now, rather than send anyone else to do the job. And since SHIELD and ATCU have such varying opinions when it comes to the treatment of Inhumans, being caught by the National Guard could mean imprisonment in the Raft for Daisy.
But despite all the inconveniences the new director may bring, Coulson is more relieved than sad about his demotion, according to Gregg.
"Other than the regrets he has about where Daisy seems to be, I suspect there\'s a part of him that\'s very happy to return to Agent Phil Coulson," he revealed.
Meanwhile, Gregg\'s co-star Bennet recently opened up about her character Daisy, how Lincoln\'s death changed her and what fans can expect from the rogue Inhuman in season 4.
"I think it makes her more ruthless being so close to what she thought was her own death. And then it happening in one of the worst scenarios she could ever think of, which is the person that she loved doing it for her, I think it changes her in a way where she probably will face life with even more ruthlessness," she told EW.
Find out who the new director of SHIELD is when "Agents of SHIELD" season 4 premieres on ABC this fall.
