Ashley Tisdale Tells Us How ‘Young & Hungry’ Will Inspire Independent Ladies Everywhere

Ashley Tisdale knows what it takes to become a #GirlBoss an industry full of dudes.

As an actress and producer, Tisdale is one of the harding working girls in Hollywood. She not only produces ABC Family’s hit comedy “Young & Hungry,” but she also occasionally guest stars as Logan Rawlings, a kickass magazine editor with major career ambitions. Of course, sometimes, her ambition gets the best of her — and in tonight’s (April 8) episode of “Young & Hungry,” Gabi finds out first-hand what it’s like to be a part of one of Logan’s crazy ideas.

Speaking to MTV News to promote the episode, Tisdale gave us the deets on Logan’s “hilarious” idea, her new show “Clipped” and what it’s like working with her former “Suite Life” co-star Phill Lewis on “Young & Hungry.”

MTV News: So first and foremost, when we catch up with Logan in season two, will she be sporting any new tattoos?

Ashley Tisdale: She won’t be sporting any new tattoos. They’re the same ones. It was actually pretty funny because when we first did that episode last year, we were like, “Oh, yeah, that would be great” and we didn’t even think about when I came back. [Laughs] We had to find the same exact ones! I think we did change them a little bit, but they are pretty much the same tattoos that I had to sport for two days.

MTV: She should probably just come back next season with a full sleeve, right?

Tisdale: I know! That would definitely be pretty crazy. I don’t know if I have enough time in the makeup chair.

MTV: Emily Osment told us that Logan returns in a pretty hilarious dream sequence. What can we expect?

Tisdale: Logan works at the San Francisco Magazine, and Gabi is trying to get ahead in her career, so Logan has this great opportunity for her. She suggests that Gabi should start cooking with marijuana [laughs], and that’s where it starts. I think Logan is always trying to be hip and cool, and she’s trying to find really cool ways to write editorials, and this is something cool and edgy. It kind of puts Gabi in an interesting position because she’s never cooked with! So she tries it out, and hilarious things happen. It’s a pretty fun episode.

MTV: For a comedy, “Young & Hungry” pushes a lot of boundaries for ABC Family. It’s one of the things I really love about it. As a producer on the show, are you making a lot of those decisions?

Tisdale: Yeah, definitely. It’s been really awesome that they allow us to push it like that. We love being able to a show for an audience that includes me. I’d watch the show! And I’m always looking for projects to produce that I would enjoy. That’s so important. As I’ve gotten older, we’ve wanted to do more mature content.

MTV: And it still balances so well with the physical comedy aspect of the show. I know you’re well versed in physical comedy, as is Emily. Can we expect more of that in season two?

Tisdale: Yes! The whole cast is so great with comedy, and the physical comedy aspect to it. It’s one of my favorite parts of the show as well. They’re all so talented, between Rex [Lee] and Jonathan [Sadowski] and Emily. Emily is so adorable as Gabi. We have so much fun together.

MTV: At the beginning of the season, Gabi was torn between Cooper and Josh. So are you #TeamCooper or #TeamJosh? Or, are you #TeamGabi?

Tisdale: I’m definitely always Team Gabi. I think it’s so important, as young women, to have those relationships, especially when you’re in your early 20s. But it’s always so important to focus on yourself. I think it’s always great to have someone who’s independent and focused on their work. Sometimes, girls focus too much on relationships — like, “I need a boyfriend!” But you should really just focus on yourself. But it will all come together when you least expect it.

MTV: You and Gabi are very similar. You’re both young and ambitious. I know you have another new series called “Clipped,” coming up on TBS, so how do you find the time to balance everything?

Tisdale: It’s definitely hard. It’s been super busy. When we first started the second season, it was a couple of months ago, so I was able to be very present. I’m usually there for table reads, producers’ run-through, the network run-through and tape night. Thankfully, we have a lot of producers on the show, so if I’m not there, I’m not concerned because there are so many people who are watching over it. But now that I’ve started by series “Clipped” I’ve been more invested in this world. As soon as I settle in here, I’m going to try and go back and forth. I still read the scripts and catch up with everyone. It is kind of a balance. It’s a lot, but I love doing so many things.

MTV: I know your old friend from “The Suite Life of Zack and Cody,” Phill Lewis, has directed an episode of “Young & Hungry.” Is there a chance he’ll come back to direct another episode this season?

Tisdale: Yes! Oh my gosh. Phill is such an amazing director. He directed for the first time on “Suite Life,” and he’s so good at it. When we started “Young & Hungry,” I knew we needed Phill. When he came in and was totally interested, everyone was super excited to have him. As an actor, you’re able to really talk the actors’ language. It’s always so great seeing him.

MTV: Can you believe it’s been 10 years since the premiere of “Suite Life?”

Tisdale: It’s really scary! But you know what? When “Clipped” got picked up, it really sunk in. I was like, “Wow. It’s been 10 years since I’ve been on my own, multi-camera sitcom.” That’s so insane. But I’m just so excited to be back on TV doing what I love.
