Track and Field Question

It's my first year doing track and I want to do a field event, but I don't know if I should do shotput or long jump. Can someone explain what they are? Also, which do you like better and why?

I'm also running 4x400 (relay) and the 1600 (1 mile).

To do shotput, you need to be strong. Its basically just throwing a heavy ball as far as you can. To do long jump, you need to be able to get a good run up, then you just jump into a pit of sand.
