I think people don't like this movie because of a few simple reasons. One, it's a romance movie. I know plenty of people who say they absolutely hate romance and rather see guts spill out on the battlefield. Two, it's not a kid's movie. This can be a reason because the audience watching the film are mostly female adults/adolescents (not to sound sexist), and we all know how opinionated women can be.
Finally, the real reason I think people don't like Titanic, is because it's just plain worldwide famous. I know that when I saw Avatar I was expecting a lot more than the movie really provided, due to a lot of my friends telling me how amazing it was. In the end, it disappointed me. This can be the same for Titanic. I can go up to some random person and say, "Oh my gosh, Titanic is such a great movie! You HAVE to see it!" They might get that same disappointed feeling as I did when they do see the movie (but honestly, who hasn't?) because I exaggerated how great some things can be. Also, there are people who immediately go against something that's infamous. Like me, I never liked Twilight just because it was popular. (And don't talk me out of it, because I've read the first book and seen the first two movies, and I just don't like it.)
Yes, Titanic is an amazing movie in my eyes, and in many eyes of others as well. But to others they might have a different opinion on what's a great movie. And that is why I think people don't like Titanic as we do.
