It would be very difficult, but it could be done.

No. It doesn't work unless it's set in the Victorian period.

Totally. It'd be SO easy to do!

I know there are a decent amount of phics that try to pull this off, but most really don't succeed. There are a lot of aspects of the plot that just wouldn't translate to a more modern setting. In the original novel there is the question of class distinctions in the background with Christine and Raoul, modern medicine would probably have made it so Erik would have sought at least basic cosmetic surgery to make him look at least partially normal, and it would also be much more difficult for Erik to have remained undetected in the cellars today. Not to mention a lot of other little things.
I can see something in the same vein working, but I don't think you would end up having POTO proper.

Someone tried but it was a joke. I think it could be done, but it'd be hard because now a days people dont try to strangle people in the basment of opera houses....

I think it takes away from the very feel of the story if you try to put it into modern times. Erik wouldn't be able to hide under and opera house, with modern day security I doubt he could even get into one. His character would either have to be connected to the opera in plain sight or not in the opera at all. Both completely destroy a major element of the story. Besides Erik is a genius! He's ahead of his time era already and back in the 1800's that meant things like electric lights and so on were futuristic and magical. If we made him a genius now we'd go into the realms of flying cars and computer nerds... I don't want a computer nerd Erik. It's SO not appealing to his character. Lastly, how would he get away with murder? Back then it was easy to get lost in the crowd and to disappear without leaving evidence. The technology for catching criminals now days would have his bootie in jail in a week and 'The Phantom of the Paris men's correctional facility' doesn't sound like an interesting story to me.

The era it's originally sat in is interesting and mysterious, everything is on the borderline of the old days and modern times. I think to change that would completely destroy the entire franchise.
