I think it kinda sent a bad message that she choose not the guy who gave, encouraged, and would continue to sponsor her singing career, and chose instead the guy who was in a society that would force her to be a stay-at-home mom.

She chose the Phantom you guys, if you can recall. And it was because of that that he released her. She loves Raoule, but she was willing to forget it all to save him. In the end, because of that sacrafice, Phantom learns what being loved and loving someone is like. So he releases her to live her life with her love.

Of course I'd pick the Phantom rather than Raoul...Raoul only showed up after her "Think of me performance" When she got famous...I think thats the only reason why he noticed her...and just because they were friends during childhood dosen't mean that they should date! With the Phantom...her life would never be the same...in a good way...He loves her...He'd do anything for her...

I understand why the Phantom let her go, but still she shouldnt have picked Raoul, why was she so afraid of Erik? if u notice, she became afraid of him after she saw his distorted face! thats stupid. what Erik did shows how big his love for her was, that he let her go with someone else. thats why he deserved hr even more

Raoul. The Phantom is a completely tragic character, it would've been weird to see him get the girl, because he's not supposed to. It's his eventual sacrifice of Christine that makes the ending so powerful and heartwrenching, because he's gone from being completely obcessed with this girl (to the point of lunacy) to letting her go through the realisation of her unconditional love for Raoul. And the realisation that by letting her go, he can give her the life she desires, her life with Raoul. The Phantom himself goes from lust to selfless love.
It's beautifully tragic and should not end any other way.

MiraclexBlazer picked Raoul:
Well, without the ending the way it is
We wouldn't have this transformation of the character
I mean, here is is, this man who throughout his entire life
Has be despised and tormented by one of the only things he can't control, his face
Even his own mother loathed the site of him
So he goes through life feeling so much betrayal and hatred from the world around him even
Though he has so much he could give through his brilliance
And then he finds Christine and falls in love with the sound of her voice
It becomes all he can think about and he probably is writing the songs tailored to the beauty to her voice
And then his predicament worsens and he not only is obsessed with her talent but just everything about her
But she is in love with another man, Raoul
Who is an exceptionally powerful and wealthy man
But not only that, he also has a face free of disformation
He becomes mad with jealousy and plots against the two lovers
but in the end he discovers that no matter what you do you can never force anyone to love you
and that no matter gruesome horrors may lye on the outside
It is what's on the inside that captures the love of another
and that is when he looks back on his life with new clarity
and discovers everything in a new light

The facts are: Christine loved Raoul more than anyone else, even if she did have some feelings for Erik.
Erik was a pchycotic murderur, who could not control his own anger.
He abducted her and tried to make her choose him, by threatening her and Raoul.
Erik himself realizes that he can't keep Christine with him and is partly redeemed when he lets her go.

If you would have asked me after I had just finished Leroux's I would have said Raoul. But after reading so much fluff ridden E/C books and even Susan Kay's novel my views have definitely been skewed. Ok, let's get something straight, I do NOT think that the ending of Phantom should be changed. It's a tragedy, that's the POINT. Even though I yell at my T.V and kick furniture every time she rows away with Raoul singing all lovey dovey (come on, that was just low...) I can say with confidence that Christine ended up with who she loved the most (believe me, my inner Kay supporter is crying as I say this...but unfortunately I cannot treat that book as cannon. Really, I wish I could)

look at Raoul. He was completely disfigurement free, he truly loved Christine, he was safe and warm, and really...just not insane or emotionally abusive (bloody annoying and whiny at points? yes. But not a crazy killer, so he gets brownie points for that) STILL my little heart just crys every time I see Christine leave the Phantom, and I begrudgingly admit, even though would ruin the story... i'd love to see Christine end up with Erik.

One could argue that she chose The Phantom and was forced to go with Raoul, depending on the version, or how it is acted on stage.

I think this is the situation in the 2004 movie, and some stage shows (Some actresses make it seem like Christine is in love with Erik, while some make it seem like she loves Raoul more, and sometimes the Phantom is portrayed like such a creep that you are glad Christine went with Raoul.) the 1990 version, and Kay's novel. Other times, like the 1998 version, Christine is DEFINITELY better off with Raoul, or the raoul-like character. Course, in the 1998 movie, neither options were really that great...

I agree with both swimten1 and boothcrazy425. Yes, Raoul is a sissy, but, being honest, he ONLY started to love Christine after he heard her sing...which is just...bland. I believe Christine and Erik are ment for each other because they both love music and could never go on with their life without it (like me ^^). Second, is that Erik loved Christine for many more reasons then Raoul who just loved her because they were childhood friends. Like I would say: "Just because you were childhood friends, doesn't mean you'll be a good longtime couple," which, of course, is showen in Love Never Dies.

I also agree with CrimsonShadow, R/C scenes were just too sweet. >_<' Plus, their kisses didn't seem to have passion at all, they were all boring and made me not so excited about the movie. With E/C kissing, their kisses were more breathtaking and that's another reason why I love the couple. ^^' Now, sorry for my rant, I will shut up now.

Have you all read the book by Gaston leroux? Very good, the Phantom is looked at in a different light, the movie did very well. He is sensitive yet strict. In the book he is a little more possessive than he was in the movie. But such a good read if you all every get the chance. But for the movie, I also think she "chose" the phantom in order to save raoul.

As much as I think The Phantom is really sexy, I don't think he's a good guy. He's mixed up and lonely and sad, yes, but he's also the villain of the first movie. Okay, so he's sexy, has an AMAZING voice, and is REALLY sympathetic, but he's a villain! He kidnaps the girl, stalks her, tries to kill anyone who gets in his way, manipulates her through her love of her dead father...the guys a creep.
Roul, however boring he might be in certain versions, is a better person. He cares for Christine and loves her. He is kind, nice, and loyal. I think the main conflict of the romance in the movie/book/play is "Love Vs. Lust" And love wins.

I mean I love the Phantom, I'd choose him, but I'm no Christine..
I think Raoul's the right choice for her.. Christine needs someone to protect her, she is scared of the Phantom and really the choice is love or music.. she chose love..
Raoul loving her has nothing to do with her voice, he loves her, as a person, and he has for a long time, so what is wrong with that?

I choose the phantom, but I do realize that he is a FICTIONAL CHARACTER that's why it doesn't matter that he planned to kill everybody in the opera house (including Christine) but she changed his mind by simply agreeing to be his "living bride" and then kissing him on the forehead. Erik is by far, a more interesting character than Raoul and that's what makes him the obvious choice, maybe he's not the best choice but then again neither is Raoul. Raoul's like a damsel in distress he is always needed to be saved or helped by someone (even more so in the book) e.g. Christine, Madame Giry, The Persian, even Erik himself, though that was for Christine's sake. If I were Christine Raoul would look a lot less appealing to me, just saying.

I love Erik as a character, but to be honest, I definitely wouldn't choose him if I were in Christine's place. He was teetering on the edge of insanity and not only kidnapped Christine, but tried to force her to marry him. His actions were even more extreme in the book. I wouldn't really want to be with a guy like that, especially someone who would try and force me to marry him. Raoul was sweet and kind and tried to protect Christine. I think she made a good choice.

What I always found romantic about Erik is he KILLS innocent people for Christine, he could be executed for that, but he LOVES HER SO MUCH he does it so she can get what SHE WANTS. (except in the 1990 version; Yeston and Kopit screwed their version up for TV. WHY?) This, of course scares her, so she goes with Roul. He is in the Navy and hasn't killed to HELP her YET. Yes, enemy Solders are innocent people MOST of the time.

Well, I always say that if she loved the Phantom, she would have stayed with him. Raoul never forced her to follow him, and it's actually plain obvious even in the 2004 movie that she loves Raoul. Well, I understand why she choose Raoul over the bad boy. I mean, Erik was sometimes even cruel with her (just look at the scene in the cemetery, hitting hard on the daddy-issues), and the fact that she has ripped her mask off during the Point of No Return is a pretty obvious proof that she doesn't love him and that she was playing the game all along... I mean, I love the Phantom, I prefer him over Raoul, but Christine made the right choice. And I think she really did love Raoul.

Christine2004 picked Phantom:
One of the reasons why Christine didn't pick the Phantom was that he "kills without thought" and I can understand that in the version with Robert Englund but in the Gerard Butler version he killed like two people so I don't think that's a valid argument. Also, I obviously think she should have picked the phantom because of how much he loved her. People have said that Raoul only noticed her after she became famous, and that's kind of true, but there's more to it than that. The Phantom loved her so much that even when she betrayed him he tried to get her back and maybe his methods weren't the best, but it's the thought that counts. He truly helped her throughout her life not only with her career, but emotionally after her father died. Where was Raoul when that happened? Also, people say that it was the end that showed the Phantoms character development, and that is also true, but they could have had both. He could have let her go, and then when she gave him the ring she could have chosen him and Raoul could have easily found someone else. She condemned him even further to his life of loneliness and for that I will always choose the Phantom over Raoul.
