technically Raoul had claim on Christine first having grown up together and being so called "childhood sweethearts". Even though Erik is more deserving of being loved I can't blame raoul for trying to save the woman he loved from a life of living in solitude...and lets face it who doesn't hate the gypsy who kep Erik in a cage?!

I would say that there isn't precisely a villain in the story. You simply have the classic good and boring hero, and the dark brooding much more interesting anti-hero. And if we're going to get into the realm of Erik's psychological scarring, then it really can't be blamed on a single individual. Mind f**ks like that take years of emotional turmoil from multiple sources. But if we HAVE to point fingers, then I'm pointing straight at Erik's mother. Though I guess she wasn't in the movie, huh? *Hides behind her copy of Kay and scurries into the corner to cross referance annotations from the Essential POTO, deciding that she really needs a life...*

I admit that the guy who bet up the Phantom as a kid was too but the reason I say Raoul is is because Christine and the Phantom are in love right in front of him and he just couldn't handle it Christine is his and that's that!!!

Phantom and ESPECIALLY sleazy mob who tortured him, helping to create a monster. Raoul didn´t STEAL Christine, she CHOSE a very brave, loving man who was ready to DIE for her to save him for Phantom.

Ok so I've liked this musical years... So initially.. Raoul is the hero he saves Christine, whoo... then Raoul is a horrible person because he stole the Phantom's only chance of love, *stab stab*.. and now... I love the Phantom he deserves to be happy, but so do Raoul and Christine and they love each other, there is no stealing, no Raoul can't handle it, she goes to him... There is "Little Lotte" they are reunited and then there is "Why have you brought me here" where she seeks him out.. And the only "stealing" of Christine happens in "Point of no Return"..

Neither. I think the real villain was society in general for casting the phantom aside for no better reason than that he was different.

I Think Raoul should have had nothing to do with trying to save her the between the 2 of them as there was love and he ruined it.

I think raoul isn't a bad guy at all. We can't hate him just because and say "he is the bad because the phantom is hotter". Anyway, if the phantom haven't been tortured for all his life, this whole story would be just a simple love trinagle, or don't even happen. We would choose the phantom but christine chose Raoul. It's her taste, her desicion. Imagine that a bunch of crazy fangirls would persuade you to love somebody you can't, somebody you don't even find attractive and throw away your current love interest just because they would love him.

I don't think there is a true villain in the story but I still wish that Christine chose erik instead of that raoul guy.
