how do i make a tails charactor chao?

ive also tried to make other charater chao, but they never turn out the right way, what am i doing wrong? for amy, i gave her her eggshell, and gave her a skeleton dog, and she evolved into a power type. i gotta be doing something wrong. can someone help?
