Well, according to Archie Comics, the chaos emeralds where meteorites in space, and then they fell from the sky, two hundred total. Of course, because the world is mostly water, some of them fell into the water and got destroyed when they hit the bottom. Others shattered because of the fall. There where only eight chaos emeralds left after that, and then a giant elephant thing fused with the eighth emerald after a freak accident. He was destroyed, along with that emerald. The other seven have grown so old, they can't be destroyed. Then the echidnas studied the emeralds, and found the ultimate power.
