Chapter two: New living situation

“This is… uh… well I guess I should just start a new one. My name’s Ni-… *sigh*. I’m Talon. I’ve been on the road for three to five days. I’ve been traveling with two supernatural mobians, like myself. A girl named Kal, who has a bunch of strange rings, and a living scarf… or something, and an imploding dude named Jesse. We’re being chased by some Overlander organization, and have lost… our loved ones in the process. We’ve stopped to get some gas, about three-hundred miles or so from North-Tropan. I guess having a driving license, even if your parents don’t let you ever drive the car, is useful. From what I can tell, Kal and Jesse were orphans originally. Kal was living with an elderly man she called “Max”, while Jesse was living with his four cousins, unitl both were killed, just like my parents. I’m guessing that they knew about the people after us, or they wouldn’t have had that secret bunker thing, in the backyard. If you ever find this, then I’ve either lost it and am extremely embarrassed, or I’m dead. If I’m dead, remember what I’ve just said.”
“End of first entry”
“Ready to go Talon?” Kal called out, as she came out from the gas-station’s store, holding a shopping bag.
“Wait… I thought your name was Nick.” Jesse noted in confusion.
“My name is Nick.” Talon informed. “Talon’s just a codename.
“Olllllright then!” Jesse replied. “Do I get one?”
“Don’t think you or me need one.” Kal answered, as she arrived in front of their vehicle; an old beat-up truck. “I just got here when it happened, and you… well… maybe you do need one. Whatever. We’ll figure that out later. Again, we ready?”
“Yeah. Hop in” Nick responded, as he climbed into the driver’s seat. “Whatcha get?”
“Chips… cookies… a couple of slushies… and a radio, seeing how the one in the car got broken.” Kal informed, as she made her way to the front passenger seat.
“Who whoa no.” Jesse intervened. “I’ve been in the back, where all I can smell is the engine for ten hours. I’m in front this time.”
“Ladies first.” Kal hinted, keeping her seat.
“Show me one, and I’ll happily let her in.” Jesse quipped back.
“Just get in!” Nick interrupted. Jesse gave a large groan, and climbed into the back. The next two hours were like the other two days. Jesse continued to complain about his situation, Kal did her best to keep the inside of the car clean and organized, and Nick simply drove, without a peep.
Once at the end of the two hours, the three allies found themselves at a rather unusual conflict. Three cars and five mobians were in a gun-fight, with one side holding a large suitcase, and the other side apparently trying to get it. Nick quickly hit the brakes, but not quick enough. Both sides noticed them.
The three that were closer to Nick and his friends started towards their truck. The other two took this advantage and began to fire at the already damaged vehicle opposite to them. They hit their mark. Before the three got even close to the truck, they became engulfed in their exploding car.
One of the two survivors, who had the case, began running towards Nick and the others, just as a piece of the wrecked car flung into his own, causing it to explode along with his partner. It caught part of his foot, but he didn’t let that stop him.
The man began shooting at Kal; yelling out “Hands where I can see them!” Kal raised her hands, but Nick did not, while Jesse was unnoticed. “I SAID, RAISE YOUR HANDS!” He yelled again. The man flung open the truck’s door, then rammed his gun against Kal’s head. “Hands up, or I kill your girlfriend here…”.
Talon glared at the man furiously, then slowly raised his hands while saying “their raised… your turn.” Before the man could figure out what Talon had said, he was engulfed in the strange mist controlled by Nick, and faded (teleported) above the cliff, to the side of the road… he fell… and died.
“What did you just do?!” Kal yelled at Talon.
“Saved your life… yay for me…” Talon glared, grinding his teeth.
“Guys.”
“You didn’t have to kill him!” She yelled a second time.
“Guys!”
“As if I was trying too! What? Did you have another plan???” Talon angrily debated.
“GUYS!!!”
“WHAT?!?!?” The both yelled at Jesse.
“The case is still there.” He answered, pointing the floor. Nick got out of the car, and brought the case inside with him. It opened pretty easily, and revealed…
“It’s a lottery ticket… for… guys…”
“Five… bi-bi…” Jesse had passed out before being able to finish his observation, but the others could tell what he meant. Five… billion… dollars, in won lottery money... plus a bonus mystery gift.
“That must have been what they were after.” Kal noted. “We can’t keep this.”
“Why not?!” Talon questioned rudely. “There’s no name or anything that could tie it. And the only people who could have an trace are burned up.”
“How could you say something like that!?” Kal exclaimed in astonishment.
“I only killed one of them, and it was only self-defense!!” Nick quarreled. “They killed themselves, and this isn’t going to go to some charitable auction, or to their families, because we know we can’t ID them, and if we don’t take it someone else will! You got a better idea?!!”
“Fine…” Kal growled. “For now…” They remained silent the rest of the trip, mostly because Jesse was unconscious, and got into a hotel at around nine-fifteen at night. They arrived, unloaded, and slept with very little words between the three of them.
The next morning the three of them went about their own tasks. Kal got the supplies and such ready for their trip, Nick went over to get the ticket transferred, and Jesse freaked out… then helped out Kal. Nick eventually returned in the early afternoon, with a half confused, and half excited look on his face.
“The ticket’s authentic…” He began, “and we got a bunch of money, but… we also got a new house. Some old mansion on the edge of town, that sits on a hill.”
“AND WHAT COULD POSSIBLY BE WRONG WITH THAT?!?!” Jesse asked impatiently.
“It’s really old, and needs some repairs.” Nick informed. “They said that that was our problem… which is really weird. Better news though; we got a limo to take us there.”
“SHOT GUN!!!!” Jesse yelled, rushing out the hotel door.
“I think he likes the idea.” Kal said teasingly. “You don’t seem too excited about this.”
“I just lost my entire family, my house, my life, and just because we get the means to start a new one, I’m supposed to be excited?” Talon snapped. “I’m surprised that you two are so calm… or forgetful.”
“It’s called coping.” She said. “There’s a time for tears and all, and of course I’m upset, but right now, I’m trying to have a happy moment. Jesse on the other hand, might just be in denial. I mean, he’s lost more than either of us, from what he’s told us, and he’s already fine.”
“I don’t understand how you do it.” Nick sighed. “I don’t know if I’m impressed or annoyed.”
The drive to Halcliph Mansion was a good half hour, but it was never the less worth the trip. The limo drove up a slightly steep hill, with a drive way going straight up to the mansion, and one that made a corkscrew path up to it. They hopped out of the car, and walked up to the front door, with the driver and host waiting at the limo.
Kal gave the door-handle a nice large blow, as to remove the large amount of dust, then opened the door. Inside the mansion was in much better shape than they had expected. The furniture was nicely covered in white sheets, there was a double-way-staircase, with a hallway at the bottom and top, and a large chandelier, hanging on the roof. The only noticeable damage was the dust, and a broken window.
Kal and Jesse quickly explored the rooms, where they found many interesting areas. There were six bedrooms, one of which was greatly harmed, but fixable, three lounges, one large dining room, and one large kitchen, not including the front living room, and the backyard.
Jesse had made his way to the backyard, which was a large flat square, at least twenty yards across, which stuck up from the hill and drive-way below it. The grass was extremely wet from a recent rain, which caused Jesse to slip and almost fall off the side. Thankfully Kal had made her way to the backyard, just in time to grab his feet, and pull him back up.
“First order of business: building a fence.” Jesse teased.
They all walked back to the limo, to give their answer, which was of course “We’ll take it!”
“Good.” Said Mr. Rosario; the host of the deal. “Now the only thing that’s left is the press. I’ll call them now.”
“Wait!” Nick said. “Would it be possible not to have the press?”
“Well… why?” Mr. Rosario replied.
“We’d just prefer not to have any undue attention.” Talon said. “Cameras don’t agree with us.”
“Well we could just have it in the newspaper instead… I guess…” The man suggested.
“Is there any chance of not having the press in on this?” He inquired.
“Well there has to be a name, or you might not even be allowed to take the mansion or the house.” Rosario informed. “Sorry.”
“… *sigh*… alright. We’ll do the newspapers. Talon groaned. “But no photos!”
The rest of that day was spent with Kal and Jesse trying to answer the questions of the multiple reporters, but Talon instead making small fibs about their story. After five hours, they were finished, and it was getting dark.
“I’ve called the home-repair-people.” Kal informed. “They can be here tomorrow. Now do you want to tell me what that was all about?”
“If the people after us see anything that looks or sounds like us, they’ll find us.” Talon said. “We have to be as under the grid as we can.”
“You really think that they’ll find us?” She asked.
“They leveled a public store and a neighborhood house, in plain sight, with tanks! Even if they aren’t smart enough to find us, they’re relentless enough.” Talon reminded.
The next day…
“So this is entry two in… whatever I’m going to call this thing.”
“This is Talon, and I’m trying to catch a break. We just got ourselves five billion dollars and a new mansion home, talk about lucky. Kal has been helping out the workers here, that are fixing the place up, and keeps trying to get Jesse and me to help too. I’m trying to get this is before she finds me again. It’s turning into a pretty neat place so far. Heh heh. The best part is that we don’t to go to any school, seeing how I told them that I’m eighteen, not seventeen. So-“
“There ya are!” Kal exclaimed, scarring the day-lights out of Nick.
“FLAT-JACKS AND TOAST!!!!” He screamed. “… don’t look at me like that, I’m starving.”
“Then go to the store.” Kal suggested. “And while you’re there, you can get us a real car.”
“Ugh. Fine.” Talon hopped in the trashed truck, and drove off to the outdoor plaza, in the city sitting a half-mile from the mansion. He got some groceries, which mostly consisted of packaged meals, (seeing how he had no idea what he was supposed to get) got some pizza for him and his friends, then went to get a car. To him, that was the fun part.
At first he found the regular boring models, but then he saw three tricked out things. One was red, with flames, and such on the side, one was black and blue, and probably slide-up doors as well, and one was silver, with three glowing strips going across it, which changed colors. Oh… and it was a hover-vehicle. The choice was less than difficult.
A few million digits later, Talon was cruising (or should I say hovering) back to the mansion in the ride of his dreams. As he drove back, however, he noticed something on the side of a bus. It was a poster, with a picture of a mobian business man on the side, and a phone-number next to that. Talon recognized that face. The man from the park. The name was Carl Lenezz, so that’s who he’d be calling.
Unfortunately Talon had not bought a phone, so he quickly made his way to the mansion, where he hoped there would be one. Kal and Jesse were still helping the workers with the décor, when they heard a strange whirring sound. They went out to see what it was, and saw the new car, and Talon.
“C-… c-c-c-c-c-car… p-pret-ty… mine… want… precious…” Jesse stuttered.
“N… nice choice, T-talon.” Kal complimented nervously.
“Do you have a phone?” Nick asked. They didn’t respond. They were still starring at the car. “Ugh. I’ll just ask one of the workers.”
Nick left into the house, while Kal and Jesse simply stood in front of the vehicle, with dropped jaws. They eventually came out of shock to an extent, then glared over at each other slightly, and finally raced to get in first.
Talon quickly got a phone from a worker, and called the number he was trying to remember. “Hello, Mr. Lenezz’s office, Carol speaking.” A woman with a “new Yorker” accent greeted over the phone.
“Hello. My name is Nick Falon.” Talon said. “I would like to make an appointment with Mr. Lenezz. It’s a very urgent matter.”
“I’m sorry. Mr. Lenezz in at a conference at West-Tropan and won’t be back for another five days.” She informed.
“Is there a place there that I can reach him at?” Nick asked.
“Well he does have a special- wait… Falon?”
“Y-yes.” Nick nervously answered.
“He talked about you for a bit. Said you were killed or something.” The Carol informed. “If you want to meet up with him, I can give him a call. You’ll probably find him at Leno’s Dinner. He loves Italian food and all that.”
“Thank you. Good-bye.”
“Good-bye.” Talon quickly hung up the phone, and walked out the door to find the others still fighting over who gets to drive the car.
“HEY!!!” He yelled out… they stopped, then slowly got out. “We’ve got somewhere to go.”
“Where?” Kal asked.
“There’s a guy that might know a bit about why those people are after us.” Talon answered.
“But we can’t leave just yet.” Kal said. “Not until the remodeling is finished. You especially can’t leave, cause you’re the one who technically owns the place.”
“Then you two drive over and do it.” Talon suggested.
“I’ve got to stay here and organize everything.” Kal informed.
“And I… can’t drive… well…” Jesse said weakly.
“UGH!!! How long until they’re finished!?” Nick questioned.
“A couple of days, most likely.” Kal answered. “How do you know about this guy anyway?”
“I met him in the park, and he said he knew my Dad before he died!” Talon snapped. “I don’t believe anything he said about it, but he might know something useful. I can be back in time.”
“Where is he right now?” Kal asked.
“At… the next city over.” Talon admitted.
“Fifty miles, which means around an hour to get there, then two hours of info, then another hour to get back isn’t gonna cut it.” Kal said. “There’s all types of forms and stuff that you’ll have to sign before you can go.”
“Fine. One second.” Talon walked into the house. He didn’t come out for an entire half hour. “Signed everything, and they know about a small trip to visit and old friend.” He said, with ink-stained hands. “Now can we go?”
“Wait… how did you…?”
“It’s I just said yes to all their first choices… well, most of them.” Nick responded as he got in the car.

“Well it might turn out… or look all disco-ish.” Jesse said, trying to comfort Kal.
“Maybe…” Kal pondered. “Let’s just go.” They hopped into the car, then started towards West-Tropan, to find the man that they hoped had answers.
