Why did sega create shadow the hedgehog?

U C, Nintendo just couldn't handle all the "LET'S DO IT!"s or "UR 2 SLOW!"s any moar. They needed a character who was down 2 Earth who knew that talking hedgehogs were screwed since their existence.
