you beat me to it. I was going to say Lily dead. He desparatly pleaded with Dumbledore to try and help save her. And if I remember correctly even asked the Dark Lord to spare her. Poor guy lived with regret, and lonliness his whole-life. That is why I think a part of him embraced death when Nagini hit him. We know he could have fought back.

Plus I do keep forgetting the placement for the DADA was cursed. Now if Severus had survived past Voldy s death the curse would have broken upon his death. So I guess JKR kept with her own story line. Just wish one could have dodged it.

In one of my fanfics, I gave his boggart the shape of his guilt, under the form of a corpse with red hair and green eyes, green eyes that transformed themselves into the green Dark Mark cast over a place where Death-Eaters have committed a crime. I wanted to play with the notion of guilt, which I think is the thing that he might be most afraid of, that might pursue him in his most terrible nightmares.

I after past conversations believe his boggart is himself. He is so full of guilt real and self imposed by past abuse and past mistakes no one will let him live down. Plus everyone that has been a part of his life either abused him, neglected him, left him or get killed. I'm sure he feels like the grim reaper especially after Dumbledors request.

I like your idea of Severus seeing his guilt as himself.. interesting.

I must interject Sirius into this as well. He was both abused and abuser, deeply troubled...the man was very tender and extremely loyal to those he loved, yet horribly vicious to those he despised even though they did not deserve such from him (namely, Severus and Kreacher). All this just makes James seem even more cruel; there's no evidence he was ever abused or bullied himself, so he just came by it naturally.

So true. It was evenpointed out that james well tended to and cared for.It showed in his health. ONE HUGE EGOMANIAC.

Being powerless and being told he is worthless. It's this fear that lead him to the dark arts (in search of power), to joining the death eaters (search of belonging), to his prejudice against muggles and mugleborns (positioning himself as better than a certain group). If you think about it, his worst memory was not the day he found out Lily was killed nor Lily telling him their friendship was over. It was of the day he was powerless to stop the marauders from hoisting him upside down while the crowd around him laughed at his humiliation (showing his worthlessness).

This fear would probably stem from his abusive childhood.

nene, I think that's a part of the beauty of this whole thing, I mean, the whole of HP. There are so many diverse points of view, from so many different people...it's just marvelous. I have to tell you, that I have been thinking about our discussion all day. I can't even begin to say how rewarding this site has been for me. Thanks. :-D

I think it could be his father telling him that he is worthless and unwanted because part of the reason he became a death eater was to feel powerful and needed.
