I just went to the Owl City concert in Des Moines, Iowa.
He announced that he grew up in Iowa. He had lots of family members at the concert. Me and my friend stood next to them during the performance.
I don't think he would lie.... Go Iowa! :D

This is not a answer but I'm from Iowa City and people in my high school say they are from Iowa City. I can't find a definite answer anywhere on the Internet, sorry.
