Oh it's completely fanficky! I mean, the creators even said it was like their own fanfic. But it's also an example of how fanfiction can be good.

Well, the whole thing is essentially a Disney fanfic. But, I mean, the Aeneid was pretty much just an Odyssey fanfic, and people still think of it as a classic, so fanfic-y doesn't have to be a bad thing. xP

Occasionally it is. For example, everyone being related is more of a fanfiction trope than something you tend to see in canon writing. And happy ever afters/happy endings tend to quite common in fanfiction too.
