He started going down hill in season 2 for me. Now all he's doing is reverting back to his old evils (despite saying he wanted to change for Neal...despite crying at Neal's grave about how he wanted to do better)and going behind Belle's back (and using her), and being selfish. Sure it's cool that he had it in him to at least spare Belle and Henry. But how twisted is it that earlier on he planned to use Belle to get away, and was willing to kill Henry's mothers before taking him with?
