I thought he did a great job. His singing was off- but not enough to detract from the overall performance. And in a way, I'm glad he didn't sound exactly like Johnny. Nobody sounds just like Johnny.❤

It just didn't feel like he put his whole heart and soul into it. It's not that he didn't sound like Johnny that bothers me that much (nobody can sound exactly like Johnny). Also it kind of bothered me that they didn't make him wear brown contacts, with his blue eyes he looked too much like Elvis. Just the little things bothered me.

I think my added answer sums it up well, he did a surprisingly good job, but I couldn't call it great. I very well may not have excepeted anyone's portrayal, I must concede that, other than myself, though I too would have fell quite short vocally, & though I'm good enough for the stage I'm too ugly to be a Hollywood actor....however Johnny Cash was not a pretty boy wussy, which was my preconception of Phoenix, so I was surprised he did as well as he did, but it fell well sure of greatness.
