One definition of the term IS happy, cheerful, carefree, lighthearted, etc.

It may not be used that way very often anymore (unfortunately), but it is still very much a legitimate term. I do say "gay" for "homosexual" most of the time, simply because it's short and sweet. "Homosexual" is, of course, the more proper word.

Not necessarily. I mean, gay people are often given a lot of grief for being gay...while they may be proud and open about their sexuality, they may not be necessarily happy. I mean, would YOU be if you were constantly abused because of who you were in love with?

Gay as in the original meaning of the word would be yes.
But if we are talking about people here then no, there are happy straight people and happy gay people, but there are sad, depressed people of both sexuality too. Being gay doesn't mean you'll suddenly find true love, live happily ever after and never get your heart broken.

gay actually does mean happy. people just made it affiliated with homosexuals. not all homosexual people are happy.
