They already are friends, when it comes to the end of the day, garfield really does like odie, odie has always like garfield though. In fact garfield has shown his love for odie before.

Even though they both are diffrent, it doesn't mean they "hate" each other. And I mean, Garfield does have friendship feelings towards Odie. He just doesn't want to reveal it.
