Most people are scared of emos and think that they're freaks. They don't understand them and so are repelled by them. It's the same reason you might try to avoid the big, buff black guy at your school. You think they are intimidating and different and you don't understand them, and so you are scared of them.
People are always afraid of what they don't understand. Simple as that.
