[Bolt's Point of View]
Words cannot describe the excitement I was feeling. Maria is now two weeks pregnant and I'm already starting to feel like a father. She's not getting too demanding yet, but I want to do what I can to help her get by. Unfortunately, I was in for some disappointment once I get to her house.
Before I walked to the door, I see Cobra. I walked up to him and asked, "Is there anything wrong."
Cobra gave me a solemn look and said, "Bolt... It's Maria. She's a bit of an emotional wreck right now."
"Why's that?"
"I'm afraid she's had a miscarriage."
That response made my heart drop. "No," I gasped.
"I'm sorry."
"Where is she now?"
"She's in Ryan's room crying her eyes out."
"Thanks," I replied before walking through the doggie door. I walked toward Ryan's room, the sound of her sobs growing louder with every inch. When I got there, I found her on Ryan's bed curled up. Maria's head was the only thing that I could see peeking out of the blanket that covered her. She was so heartbroken that she wasn't able to notice me as I jumped onto the bed and inched closer to her. I whispered into her ear, "Maria, are you feeling okay?"
Maria turned around and embraced me. My white fur was soon drenched with her tears. I took my foreleg and gently stroked her fur. I tried to soothe her, but it was no use. "There was so much blood," Maria choked, "How could this-"
"These things… They just happen. Maria, I'm sorry."
"Please, don't say that. I know what you're trying to do, but it's just not helping."
My strokes started to go into circular motions around the back of her neck. "I'm just glad that it didn't get any worse." I shuddered at the thought. The one thing that sold possible be worse is Bruce. If he were here, heartbreak would be an understatement, Maria and I both saw a taste of that first-hand.
"Yeah… That's true… I'm just sorry I couldn't-"
"Don't even think of it. I know we couldn't get the puppies we wanted this time, but there's one thing that'll never change."
"What's that?"
I slowly licked her cheek. "I love you." It broke my heart to see her like this. Why do bad things happen especially to those who have suffered enough?"
Maria looked back at me and said through her tears, "I love you too." If this were the end of the story, then I wouldn't be telling you this because of life's cruelty to someone whose life is just too delicate. As much as I would like to say that something good did come out of this, this tale goes downhill from here…
