These days, our culture is rapidly evolving and society is begging for more and more things in the line of wifi, touchpads, and apps. To an average person, an adequate phone has to include internet and something or other that slides out. People just aren't like they used to be, and, for lack of a better word, want fancy-shmancy gadgets that have at least three uses. Just ask any elderly person and they'll tell you.
I'm sure that most of us have heard of kindles and/or nooks. They're what we call ebook readers. In case you're confused about an ebook reader's purpose, it's basically a slim and handy electric rectangle, about the size of any paperback book, on which a person can read any book they want. Books are downloaded from an huge online database with thousands of titles onto the ebook, where you can read the book and keep it. The books you download are also free, which is a plus I'm sure many of us would appreciate.
But really, apart from the free books, what is the advantage of this to just a plain old regular book you can get from your public library? Well here are just a few.
- they are portable
- in just a few seconds, they can download any book you could possibly want
- they light up, which is handy in a dim enviornment
- enviornmentaly friendly
-less material books cluttering up yuor house
Portativity is a big factor for anyone getting something. The kindle, being a lightweight ten ounces, certainly qualifies as portable. The nook has a similar weight. This could easily be slipped in your purse on the way to the cafe or a visit to the park.
Really, these e-readers really do have any book you could think of. Over a million ebooks are just in the Barnes and Noble shop. A nook or kindle can hold thousands of these electronic stories, which, admit it, is more than enough.
And for obvious reasons, backlights are very convienient, whether you're using it to read your ebook or use it as a flashlight.
But e-readers aren't all perfect. If you're just about to grab your keys and drive to the nearest Borders, wait right there. There are just as many cons to to your fantasy book as there are pros.
- If your nook or kindle breaks, what are you gonna read if you've been getting your books online the whole time and forgotten to buy any regular books?
- Their battery doesn't last forever. It will survive for two days before you charge it again. What if you're in the climax your murder mystery and James is pushing Ainsley off the cliff to the train rolling beneath them? What if you're held in suspense, crunching your fingernails, and then blackness? You'll have to wait five painstaking hours before you know if Ainsley dies or not. Tough cookie.
- Nooks cost a whopping two hundred smackeroos
- And most of all, we all know that deep down, nothing will ever live up the the enjoyment of browsing through the shelves of books at the bookstore, or turning their crisp, white leafs of paper , or sliding a cute bookmark with a funny picture in between the pages of a book.
So I enourage you to think about my article if you are thinking about buying an e-reader, or having second thoughts about your present one. But really, nothing can ever beat a good, old fashioned book.
