Debate Question

What percentage of women who'd had them performed later said that they'd regretted having an abortion?

In discussions of reproductive choice, I often hear about women who regretted having an abortion afterward. I know a few myself. But such isolated cases are anecdotal and not relevant for any debate on the topic. I wonder if anyone could and would provide statistics from studies or surveys on this issue. Whether the percentage was small or large, those data would inform the debate.

Wow, Harold, so sorry I didn't see this before!

I think it's really difficult to find an exact percentage with the resources on the net (but maybe that's just inspiration for me to get out of my chair and check out the periodical and accademic journal archive in my university's library). I found link which suggests that 80% of women who had abortions after being sexually victimized said that they regretted it. But since the title of that website is "Physicians for Life," so the source is probably biased.

That's the other problem-- depending on the source, the results are highly likely to be biased, and the research probably wasn't exactly impartial.

For example, the NARAL Pro-Choice group in California claims that the majority of women who have abortions feel "link."

It all depends on your source, really, so in short... I don't know. I'd imagine that at least SOME women would regret their choice, if not the majority, but since every survey I've found so far has been skewed, I can't say what that number is for sure.

Maybe my library will have more reliable information. I'll get back to you.

I researched this too and I had the same problem. Depending on the views of the site the numbers differ a lot. On the more official sites (like the ministry of health site) there was no information. Really frustrating.

Yeah, this is what was irritating me enough to ask the question. Articles I found never seemed to reference the actual titles of the studies, so you have to take it on faith that there were such studies and that their methodology was sound. Still, this is the best answer to the question so far.

I belive that a good 78 percent have had regrets on getting abortions. Because all they think about is that im not ready for this baby ,notready to takecare of it , but they forget the most important thing in life. I mothers and childs bond between each other. Where the women doesnt think about those feelings towards a child and thats why most women regret on having an abortion. I had a fiend that got pregnet. She was only 16 years old , and she didnt want the baby because she knew she couldnt take care of it , when she had the abortion, she was depresse for like a month , becase she felt as though she let down herself for not taking care and rasing that child tand not giving that child a life. Well thats waht i think about abortion
