Debate Question

Do you think this is fair?

Okay, I can't remember where I heard this, so I'm not sure whether it's true or not, I'm just giving you the scenario and wanting your opinion.

A group of Muslims living in England kick a girl walking down a street to death, with no apparent reason, other than the fact they were under the influence of alcohol. When taken to court, the judge let them get away with it, because they were Muslims and therefore not used to alcohol.

Personally, I do not think this is fair. In fact, I think it's outrageous. Someone was MURDERED. But what do you all think? :P

If this were a true situation, and that was all the facts of the situation and how it went down, then no, of course that's not fair, in fact, it's absolutely ludicrous.

It's so ludicrous, in fact, that I am convinced this is either total fabrication/urban legend, or this is not even close to the whole story.

I don't take "I can't remember where I heard this" as a reliable source, and you yourself admit it may not be true. Which means it was probably told to you by a friend, who said that the victim was her brother's roommate's cousin's ex-girlfriend, and probably made the perpetrators Muslim because they were an easy target to demonize. Anyone can drunkenly murder someone, whether they normally drink or not, and most Muslims, for the record, don't. For me, it's like saying "A group of Mormons drunkenly gang raped a girl." It's shocking, because Mormons don't drink or consume any sort of drug, and it's horrifying because a minority religious group we know little about and often mock ganged up on a poor girl.

This is the kind of story you receive in a chain letter email that's meant to promote fearmongering and is forwarded for its shock and outrage value. It's meant to piss people off, and the fact that there's no source only proves this to me.

And that, in my opinion, is the real crime here.

That is a little harsh don't you think? I mean no offense but anyone is capable of commiting a crime not matter how unorthodox it may be. If this was a chain letter is it so bad to ask a question about the subject partaining to the letter?

I've seen countless stories like this, and the victims and perpetrators are always different. Sometimes the victim is a Muslim woman raped by rednecks, sometimes it's Jihadists terrorizing a Catholic school girl. One thing in common is that the perpetrators are always let off the hook on some ridiculous legal technicality, because it's only purpose is to promote feelings of rage and disgust. These feelings are targeted either at the racial/religious group perpetrating the crime, or at the "flawed" legal system of the country in question. If this story IS true, as I said, then there are probably a number of facts missing. I know enough of about legal proceedings for that to be the case. Additionally, if this crime happened recently, it wouldn't have gone to trial yet, and if it happened a year or more ago, why didn't we hear about it then?

Simply no I don't think it was fair. What kind of court did they go to, an English one or a Muslim one, it makes a difference?

Ok, first of all, I have no idea why you put this story on here like this. I found the real story within 20 seconds, with the help of my friend Google.

Here it is:

So what happened was that four Somali Muslim women were drunk and attacked a white woman. She was hurt, but lived.
The quartet did walk out of court that day, but they were sentenced, to six months of suspended sentence, while the maximum sentence was five years.

I'm not sure what my opinion is, since I do not have all the facts.

yeah I found that rather quickly before answering this, but I thought I would try and be a good sporty about it.

Like I said, either total fabrication, or exaggeration/not all the facts. If they called her a "white slag" - though I do not know enough about Britain's hate crime laws - that sounds like grounds for a hate crime. I can't load the page, did they try for that?
