Debate Question

winning a online debate...

ok, so i heard of the radio this morning a intruiging arguement: "how do you know when you've won a online debate?" there were several people arguing this, and they seemed to have ideas of how to determine how to win a debate. or more, how do you tell wheather you've won a debate. they all thought different things, here are a few examples:
- You know you've won a debate when your opponent stops replying. (to me, that's stupid because on the internet, someone could be buzy, or didn't check the place the debate took place, or was away or their computer could of crashed etc...)
- You know you've won a online debate when more people back you up than your opponent.
- you know you've won a online debate when you've made the majority of the rebuttals.
- you know you've won a online debate when you change your opponents oppinions.
- no one "wins" a online debate.

what do you think? how do you know when you've won a online debate? please let me know you oppinions, i'm pretty nuteral on this one. :)

When someone starts lying, you've won.
When they say "I have to go now, but I'll be back", and when they come back, they don't continue, you've won because they fled.

When you know someone has seen your response, but chooses not to reply, you've won.

When someone says "Okay, you win", you've won.

When both parties agree to disagree, nobody wins.

When you say something, wait a few minutes and don't get a response, and you say "That's what I thought", you lose for being an idiot.

When you respond, and say "Take that!" or "What do you have to say about that, huh?!?" you lose for acting like a loser.

oddly enough, i'm pretty sure that was one of the arguments on the radio debate, "you know you've won if you so happen to be the debating profit, cinders." they all agreed on that one. ;)

The only way of really 'winning' a debate is to convince the one you're debating with that you're right, not just make them shut up. Socrates said something about this, but I can't translate correctly :p

The point isn't who said it, but the message. It could be Paris Hilton for all I care....

...I don't know. When I feel that I've won a debate, I usually feel like I don't care about the argument anymore. :/

It's probably a poor idea, I'll admit that...

that could be out of boredom, or over-debating the topic though...

Yeah, probably. Like I said, it's a poor idea.
