Debate Question

Do you think that denying the Holocaust is Anti-Semitic?

I'm not denying it, but this issue came up in my World History class today, and I was interested in hearing what people think.

I personally don't think it is, since merely declaring your belief/opinion can hardly qualify you as racist, even if that is a belief commonly shared by racists.

Also keep in mind that Jews weren't the only population targeted by the Nazi's ethnic cleansing.

The problem with that "theory" is that it gives a "reason" for why Hitler targeted the Jews, but not the five million + other people persecuted and killed. Jews only made up about 6 out of the 11 million people killed by the Holocaust. The LARGEST group persecuted, yes, but not the only one.

I can't say definitively if it's anti-semitic, or not, but it's definitely anti-common sense.

Not beleiving in the holocaust is not anti-semetic in it's self. It's just a refusal to understand history. I would however question the intentions of the first person that suggested the holocaust was a hoax.

I don't necessarily see it as Anti-semitic. It's basically giving an opinion that may differentiate from the majority, and this is one of these cases where I will simply call it ignorance. But not Anti-semitism.

I had a problem like this in my history class. The girl said that she didn't believe the Holocaust actually existed - that it was all some big conspiracy to cover up the fact that Germany and the U.S were experimenting on aliens and the experiments had gone horribly wrong.

Not anti-sematic. Just, like Cinder's said: anti-common sense.

I think it's not actual anti-semitism, but it's kind of on the road there, if that makes sense. It's more ignorance than anti-semitism.

I don't know about anti-semitism, but it really is running away from the truth, a truth that should be faced for the benefit of the future.

Being a Jew (or at least coming from a Jewish family) myself, yes, yes it is.
It's like saying that 6 million Jews were never sent to concentration camps. It's like saying that Nazis never took over Europe and took away innocent people from their homes. Did you know that in Beligum, they even tricked the Jews to thinking that they were going on vacation and made them PAY them? Not only is it anti-semitism, but it is also ignorant.

No, I didn't know that... (Considering all I learned in the Holocaust was who led it, the amount of Jews killed, what happened, when it was (and ended)...

Dragonclaws said:
It is Anti-Semitic because it describes the accounts of Holocaust survivors as lies. Holocaust deniers look at what they said and say things like "hmm, that sounds implausible" and "look, this guy said an event occurred on a different day", poking holes in the accounts to make people feel suspicious of the survivors. They think the victims pulled off a conspiracy because Jews are a sneaky bunch and no modern state would really authorize that kind of thing. They pull up what Hitler said as evidence, because he apparently seems like a more trustworthy individual than all the Jews. Just because Jews weren't the only target of the Nazis doesn't mean the deniers aren't based around Anti-Semitism. If anything, it makes them more prejudiced because they aren't just saying Jews are the liars.
