If furs are example of cruelty, skins are too.

It sooorta depends. I try to avoid them because I wouldn't want to support any cruelty. However, if leather is a by-product of the existing meat industry...it is probably better for the skin to be used rather than gone to waste... :(

It may be a byproduct but the companies get money from selling them and in china if the meat of the skinned animal has no value then they will skin the animal alive and leave him/her to die and the meat and everything else goes to waste it is also not required by law to label what kind of animal the leather or fur came from and the fur industry is notorious for mislabeling fur so even if you by faux it may contain some real stuff or they may lie about what kind of animal because in china they also skin cats and dogs then label them as something else.

Depends where the leather comes from.

If the cow was slaughtered for it, then yes, it is cruelty.

If the cow died naturally without being slaughtered, then no.

I guess it's the same with anything that comes from dead animals, really. It's the fact that so many animals are actually killed for goods that makes the act cruel.

It's one of the most cruel acts I can think of to skin an animal and wear it around :'(

It is so disrespectful to take a dead animal's skin! And to skin a cow alive... That's just pure evil.

Well if you just slaughter the cow for food then leave the hide, thats just waist. then instead of taking the hide of an animal that is already being put to use they would just slaughter a different cow for the leather. so what im saying is, if the cow is already going to be slaughtered, dont waist the hide.
