I think she was like that after the birth of Kate and Lilly, it is a motherly instinct to be overly protective. I have seen this many times with dogs, the mother will always be a playful and gentle sort but after she has her littler she gets very protective of her offspring.
My mom chose to give her life in order to bring me into the world, that right there is an act of bravery and in a way being protective. By giving herself up she could bring me into the world. My mom gave birth to me early, she lived another 6 months and lost the long battle to lung cancer at the age of 36. Most all of my life I have not had a biological mother, but I was blessed with a very loving step mom who loves me just like my real mom did, and that has helped me a lot!
The moral of the story is that a mother's love runs deeper than most any form of love, it is something that me or any other guy on here will never understand.
