Alpha and Omega Was the midnight howl dance montage scene needed in the first A&O movie, or could it have been done differently to make it not as weird?

It was fine. No need to change it to boring generic four legged crap.
Besides, many Alpha and Omega fans liked it (according to some of the feedback on a Youtube video).

It's also not weird.

I remember the first time watching it I felt very uncomfortable. I can only imagine how people felt in the theater lol. It was so weird lmao.

It definitely could've been done in such a way so that it'd be consistent with how they're animated through the rest of the movie, while still getting the general idea across that the point was for the wolves to get their freak on. I mean, was ANYONE confused as to what was really going on when Kate and Humphrey were howling for the first time? HUGE emotional moment right there, and all they were doing was sitting still. No nightclub bump-n-grind necessary for THAT. lol

I'm pretty sure a movie can have non-expecting different animations at times. And I think having an animation non-expecting can be part of it's main "weird" point.
Honestly, I'm glad they made it this way because in the end, it promotes good expression and I guess attraction to these "wolves", and this is still possible in the universe especially since this midnight thing may be a "tradition" dance and not meant to be the same as the "other howl".

If every wolf was just sitting and leaning forward, this movie would of been even more forgettable and more boring. This non-expecting shock literally made the movie better. If bad anyway, then Zootopia in many places and certain wolves holding guns is flawed in many places too because I can just make up a reason saying so and say "well, that's not comfortable to me.".

I can respect both opinions. I feel like the main reason I thought it was strange was because I was watching it with my folks at the time (When the movie came out) and it looked weird seeing the wolves dance like they did. Like I said, I can see people liking the scene. The poll shows it. I myself didn't care for it lol still loved the movie for sure.

personally, i think that was one of the worst aspects of the movie. the way these wolves were animated was.... really weird to look at. jerky movements, some off-putting facial expressions, awkward dancing. i don't remember feeling uncomfortable while watching that scene in the theater, but now that i think about it..... yeah, it was weird as hell. and believe it or not, A&O 8 did the exact same thing at the end, BUT A LOT WORSE!
