What happened?

In the scene where Kate walks away to alpha school we see her walk away and when humphrey is talking to winston we see kate almost over the hill. The Winston is done talking to Humphrey he turns around and dolows kate. But then we see kate and it looks like she is only a few feet away from Humphrey. And there is no winston behind her when we see her go over the hill. So what happed???
